An optical fiber is a type of cable which uses plastic or glass to transfer digital signals in the form of light waves. The light pulses are converted into binary values at the receiving end of an optical fiber which can be read by a computer. The cable consists of two key parts: core and cladding. The core is made of pure glass with materials like silicon dioxide whereas the cladding is doped with small amounts of boron and germanium. Doping the cladding reduces its index of refraction.
