Amazon.com Inc. /zigman2/quotes/210331248/lastsale AMZN -0.72% said Wednesday that it got more new Prime members on July 16 than any other day in the company's history. Chief Executive Jeff Bezos announced in April that Prime membership had reached 100 million. The Prime Day shopping event began at 3pm ET on July 16 and lasted 36 hours. This year, the event included Whole Foods Market and four new locations: Australia, Singapore, the Netherlands and Luxembourg. Shoppers participated across 17 countries. July 16 was also the best ever globally for Fire TV devices and Kindle e-readers, and Prime Day was the biggest event ever for the Echo Show and Echo Spot. The Fire TV Stick with Alexa Voice Remote was the best-selling product in any category across Amazon globally. In the U.S., July 17th was the biggest sales day ever for Amazon smart home devices with more than one million sold. The Ring Video Doorbell Pro sold out after its biggest day, July 16. And members purchased more than 300,000 Instant Pots and 150,000 LifeStraw Personal Water Filters during Prime Day. Amazon shares are up 58% for the year to date, outpacing the S&P 500 index /zigman2/quotes/210599714/realtime SPX -1.60% , which is up 5.1% for the period.
