Asian markets mostly gain after Monday’s slide

Nikkei up almost 2%; bad news doesn’t hurt Samsung, ASUS much

Asian markets largely gained in early Tuesday trading, a day after a regional sell-off sparked by fresh worries of a coming U.S. recession.

Japan’s Nikkei /zigman2/quotes/210597971/delayed JP:NIK +1.27%   was last up 1.8%, after sliding 3% Monday. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index /zigman2/quotes/210598030/delayed HK:HSI +2.96%   rose 0.2%, while the Shanghai Composite /zigman2/quotes/210598127/delayed CN:SHCOMP +1.60%   was down 0.3%. South Korea’s Kospi /zigman2/quotes/210598069/delayed KR:180721 +1.81%   advanced 0.2%, and benchmark indexes in Taiwan  , Singapore /zigman2/quotes/210597985/delayed SG:STI +1.56%   and Indonesia /zigman2/quotes/210597981/delayed ID:JAKIDX +1.39%   gained. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 /zigman2/quotes/210598100/delayed AU:XJO +1.15%   was about flat.

Among individual stocks, Nintendo /zigman2/quotes/208063194/delayed JP:7974 +0.22%   jumped in Tokyo trading after a report that the videogame company plans to launch two new versions of its Switch gaming console this summer. Toyota /zigman2/quotes/203803129/delayed JP:7203 +2.14%   and oil producer Inpex /zigman2/quotes/206689846/delayed JP:1605 -0.59%   also gained. In Hong Kong, oil company CNOOC /zigman2/quotes/203421416/delayed HK:883 +2.96%   and tech-component maker Sunny Optical /zigman2/quotes/206687505/delayed HK:2382 +7.31%   rose. Samsung /zigman2/quotes/209800866/delayed KR:005930 +0.74%   declined slightly in Korea after warning it would miss quarterly earnings expectations due partially to weaker chip sales. Shares of ASUSTEK /zigman2/quotes/205782850/delayed TW:2357 -0.31%  , which makes ASUS computers, rose in Taiwan despite a report that tens of thousands of its computers had been infected by a malicious auto-update virus. Oil Search   and Woodside Petroleum /zigman2/quotes/203437212/delayed AU:WPL -3.75%   slipped in Australia.
