Democratic presidential hopeful Mike Bloomberg has contributed $464 million of his own money toward his White House bid, according to a disclosure filed Thursday.
The billionaire former New York City mayor — who is self-funding his campaign after launching it in late November — also disclosed spending $221 million in January alone.
Presidential campaigns are revealing their fundraising and spending activities as of Jan. 31 because they face a Thursday deadline for reporting figures to the Federal Election Commission. Since it’s an election year, monthly hauls must be reported to the FEC by White House campaigns, rather than just quarterly figures.
On Feb. 6, Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont announced a fundraising haul of $25 million for January, in a fresh sign of his powerful ability to attract donations.
Sanders has been leading the Democratic field when it comes to receiving money from supporters, raking in $96 million in 2019, but Bloomberg and fellow billionaire Tom Steyer have been well ahead in spending, fueled by their ability to give hundreds of millions of dollars to their campaigns.
On Thursday, the campaign of former South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg said its fundraising report will show it raised $6 million in January, adding that it got $11 million in donations so far in February.
On the Republican side, President Donald Trump’s team said Thursday that his campaign and the Republican National Committee will file fundraising reports showing they combined to raise $60.5 million in January.
On Tuesday, Advertising Analytics said Bloomberg has spent more on traditional media than any other presidential candidate ever , with his $338.7 million outlay at that point topping former President Barack Obama’s 2012 outlay of $338.3 million.
On Wednesday night in Nevada, Bloomberg’s Democratic rivals piled on him as he made his first appearance at a 2020 presidential primary debate.
