Coronavirus tally: U.S. cases top 5 million, as global cases near 20 million

The global tally for confirmed cases of the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 approached 20 million, with the death toll topping 730,000, according to data aggregated by Johns Hopkins University . The U.S. has by far the more cases, at 5.05 million, and COVID-19-related deaths at 162,938, as cases have increased by 376,692 and the death toll has increased by 7,373 in the past week. Brazil is second with 3.04 million cases and 101,049 deaths. The global case total is now 19.88 million and the death toll is 731,570. India is third measured by cases that rose 2.22 million, followed by Russia with 890,799 and South Africa with 559,859. Mexico has 480,278 cases and 52,298 deaths, the third highest in the world. The U.K. has 312,574 cases and 46,659 fatalities, the highest in Europe and fourth highest in the world. China, where the illness was first reported late last year, has 88862 cases, and 4,689 fatalities
