The Dow Jones Industrial Average on Wednesday afternoon was managing to hold onto to solid gains, though stocks were off their best levels of the session in the last half-hour of trade, as supporters of incumbent President Donald Trump, protesting the election results, stormed the Capitol building, forcing Vice President Mike Pence to be ushered out of the Senate chamber and resulting the shuttering of most Congressional buildings. The Dow /zigman2/quotes/210598065/realtime DJIA -1.50% was trading up 466 points, or 1.5%, at 30,859, the S&P 500 index /zigman2/quotes/210599714/realtime SPX -0.48% was 0.8% higher at 3,757, while the Nasdaq Composite Index /zigman2/quotes/210598365/realtime COMP +0.56% was trading 0.4% lower at around 12,772. Trading on Wall Street was taking place on the heels of a Georgia Senate runoff race that looked to be shaping up in favor of Democrats. In Washington, footage of hundreds of people, representing themselves as Trump supporters, pushing through metal barricades at the back of the Capitol building about 1 p.m. Wednesday, chanting "USA! USA!" The protest also come as lawmakers debated Republicans' objections to Arizona's electoral results for the presidential election, which has been declared in favor of President-elect Joe Biden. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, the Republican senator from Kentucky, on Wednesday rejected allegations that Trump's loss to Biden was due to massive voter fraud in a forceful speech.
