The Dow Jones Industrial Average was trading near session lows late-Friday afternoon in choppy action, as investors assessed the government's response to the viral pandemic COVID-19, which threatens to throw the world into recession. The Dow /zigman2/quotes/210598065/realtime DJIA -0.04% was down 985 points, or 4.9%, at 19,099, while the S&P 500 index /zigman2/quotes/210599714/realtime SPX +0.24% was off 4.4% at 2,303, while the Nasdaq Composite Index /zigman2/quotes/210598365/realtime COMP +0.43% was off 3.8% at 6,878. All three stock benchmarks were headed for their worst weekly declines since 2008, but had opened sharply higher in early Friday trade. The action for stocks appeared to accelerate lower as crude-oil prices /zigman2/quotes/209724760/delayed CLK20 -8.67% closed down by about 10%, as business and personal activity ground to a virtual halt, suggesting much lower oil demand. Trading on the day has been tumultuous, but has also reflected a new regime of volatility that has emerged on Wall Street as the infectious disease that was first identified in Wuhan, China in December breeds uncertainty for investors, squelching buying sentiment and compelling a raft of central banks to roll out their most substantial stimulus measures since the 2008 financial crisis. The declines also come as New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo ordered all nonessential businesses to close and said residents should stay home, coming a day after Gov. Gavin Newsom told the 40 million residents of California to stay at home to mitigate the spread of the deadly pathogen.
