LOS ANGELES (MarketWatch) — Sometimes it’s the allocation that makes the difference to a trader’s winning portfolio — in a short-term play anyway, and that’s what the Fantasy Earnings Trader is all about.

Week 2 winner TrainingID bet most of his marbles on a hefty long position in Pulte Group /zigman2/quotes/201694804/composite PHM +2.57% , which climbed 14.5% over the week after an upbeat second-quarter earnings report that fueled gains across the housing sector. TrainingID also took in a handsome 14% gain on the week in a 20% long position in AOL .

The Street celebrated AOL’s cheery report, which saw the quarter’s tally boosted by a $1.1 billion patent deal with Microsoft /zigman2/quotes/207732364/composite MSFT -0.23% . See AOLrewards Wall Street — and vice versa

This week’s winner rounded out his portfolio by earning 6.95% on a nominal position in Polaris Industries, which declared a quarterly dividend of 37 cents a share on Thursday.

TrainingID finished the week with a gain of $16,012.49 for an overall return of 13.3%. Contestants were given $120,000 in virtual bucks to invest in a minimum of three stocks from a pool of 30 potential candidates.

The runner-up in Week 2, TheSugarBear, was edged out by a mere 75 cents. He also bet on Pulte and AOL but allocated his positions more evenly across his portfolio. The move would likely be more prudent in a long-term portfolio but in a fast moving competition like this, the spoils usually go to the trader who can correctly identify the big target that week.

TheSugarBear also added a solid 10% on a 20% stake in Six Flags Entertainment, which doubled its profit on strong ticket sales.

It’s not too late to join the competition. There are two more weeks of play. Picks must be in before the market open every Monday morning. Join today and prove your stock trading prowess!
