Frankfurt Airport 2020 Traffic plunges on virus

By Olivia Bugault

Fraport AG said Monday that passenger volume plunged to a historic low in 2020 as the coronavirus pandemic decimated travel.

The number of passengers at Frankfurt Airport fell 73% to around 18.8 million in 2020, with weekly traffic plummeting by up to 98% year-on-year between April and June, Fraport said. In December, traffic at the airport fell 82% to 891,925 passengers, it said.

"In Frankfurt, passenger volumes dropped to a level last seen in 1984," Fraport Chief Executive Stefan Schulte said.

Fraport's other airports in Asia, Europe and Latin America also saw sharp declines in passenger volume. For instance, passenger traffic at Slovenia's Ljubljana Airport fell by 83% year-on-year in 2020, while Brazil's Fortaleza and Porto Alegre airports saw traffic decline by 57%.

On the outlook for 2021, Mr. Schulte said he expects passenger traffic at Frankfurt Airport to reach only 35% to 45% of 2019's level in the year.
