Getlink SE said Friday that passenger traffic declined 81% in May as travel restrictions amid the coronavirus continued to weigh on its operations.

The French operator of the Channel Tunnel between the U.K. and France said the monthly number of passenger vehicles fell to 41,644 from 213,613 a year earlier.

"This figure should be seen in light of the very severe restrictions in relation to border crossings imposed by the French and British governments," the company said.

Truck traffic in May was down 29%, Getlink said, adding that demand for food, pharmaceuticals and e-commerce goods had shown resilience.

In April, Getlink's passenger traffic fell 91%.
