J.C. Penney Co. Inc. /zigman2/quotes/210599714/realtime SPX +0.48% said Tuesday that it will furlough the majority of its store hourly workers starting April 2. The department store retailer previously announced that stores were going to be closed until April 2. Now they will be closed until further notice. A "significant portion" of corporate workers at the company's home office, in Salt Lake City and at the Soho design studio as well as salaried store workers will be furloughed starting April 5. Supply chain and logistics center associates have been furloughed since March 20. J.C. Penney has 90,000 associates. The company will cover benefits for those who are enrolled. J.C. Penney has taken other cost-cutting measures including using funds from its revolving credit facility. J.C. Penney stock is up 1% on Tuesday and has slumped more than 75% over the last year. The S&P 500 index /zigman2/quotes/210599714/realtime SPX +0.48% has fallen 8% for the past 12 months.
