The S&P 500 /zigman2/quotes/210599714/realtime SPX -1.08% jumped 24 points, 0.8%, to close at about 3,120. The Nasdaq was about 62 points, 0.7%, higher at the close, at 8,541. Shares of J.C. Penney Co. Inc. jumped after beating earnings expectations for the recent quarter.
