Adolor Corp. shares more than doubled to close at $4.67, leading the gains on the Nasdaq Composite Index /zigman2/quotes/210598365/realtime COMP -1.69% . Cubist Pharmaceuticals Inc. agreed to acquire the biopharmaceutical company for about $190 million in cash. Read more on Cubist and Adolor.
Alpha Natural Resources Inc. shares climbed 9.5%. Shares in the coal company were among the biggest gainers on the S&P 500 Index /zigman2/quotes/210599714/realtime SPX -0.80% as a rise in the overall equities market and better manufacturing data from China gave the energy sector a lift. Is Caterpillar recession-proof?
Shares of Caterpillar Inc. rallied after the construction-equipment maker reported adjusted earnings of $1.93 a share in the third quarter, topping analyst forecasts of $1.63 a share.
Caterpillar Inc. /zigman2/quotes/203434128/composite CAT +0.36% saw its stock climb 5% to lead gains on the Dow Jones Industrial Average /zigman2/quotes/210598065/realtime DJIA -0.38% after the equipment maker reported a jump in earnings, topping estimates. Read about Caterpillar’s results.
First Solar Inc. /zigman2/quotes/209356097/composite FSLR -3.19% shares gained 7.8%, among the top gainers in the S&P 500 Index. The stock is sensitive to efforts among European policymakers to stabilize the region, where it sells many of its products.

RightNow Technologies Inc.'s shares rose 19% on a deal in which Oracle Corp. /zigman2/quotes/202180826/composite ORCL -1.22% agreed to buy the software company for $43 a share, or roughly $1.5 billion. Read more about Oracle’s acquisition of RightNow.
Schweitzer-Mauduit International Inc.'s /zigman2/quotes/208081440/composite SWM +0.44% shares rose 19%. The company, which supplies fine papers to the tobacco industry, said Monday that it has resolved a property dispute with Delfortgroup over fire-safe cigarette paper. Schweitzer-Mauduit also said it established a licensing agreement with Delfortgroup.
Semgroup Corp.’s Class A shares gained 20%. Plains All American Pipeline L.P. /zigman2/quotes/207478323/composite PAA -2.03% said Semgroup’s board rejected a $24-a-share buyout offer that would have valued the pipeline firm at $1.24 billion.
Silvercorp Metals Inc.'s /zigman2/quotes/209674256/composite SVM -9.55% U.S. shares added 18.5% to $9.62. The silver miner, which has been facing allegations of accounting fraud, announced Monday that a forensic report from KPMG Forensic Inc. supports the integrity of the company’s accounting system and financial reporting in China and North America.
WebMD Health Corp.'s shares added 11.5%. Billionaire investor Carl Icahn disclosed in an SEC filing on Friday a 7.9% stake in the company, which operates an online medical information website.
Kimberly-Clark Corp.’s /zigman2/quotes/201766540/composite KMB -1.45% stock was the top decliner on the S&P 500 Index, falling 4.6%. The Huggies diaper and Kleenex tissue maker cut its sales outlook and lowered the high-end of its 2011 profit forecast.
SXC Health Solutions Corp.'s shares dropped 23% following news of Cigna’s planned HealthSpring acquisition. News reports said SXC Health provides pharmacy benefit management software applications to HealthSpring, a service which may not be needed following the acquisition.
