Norfolk Southern Corp. /zigman2/quotes/200877725/composite NSC +2.21% said Monday that Chief Operating Officer Michael Wheeler will retire, after more than four years in the role. The rail road company said Cindy Sanborn will succeed Wheeler as COO, effective Sept. 1. Wheeler became COO on Feb. 1, 2016, and Sanborn joins the company from fellow rail operator Union Pacific Corp. /zigman2/quotes/209717171/composite UNP +1.27% , where she was most recently vice president of network planning. Norfolk Southern's stock, which rose 1.4% in morning trading, has slipped 2.3% year to date, while the Dow Jones Transportation Average /zigman2/quotes/210598063/realtime DJT +1.37% has lost 9.8% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average /zigman2/quotes/210598065/realtime DJIA +1.34% has declined 6.9%.
