SYDNEY (MarketWatch) -- North Korea has gone ahead with its threatened long-range rocket launch, according to media reports Friday. The country had said earlier in the week that it would launch a satellite at some point between Thursday and Monday. Other countries have said that such a launch would have been in contempt of United Nations Security Council restrictions. The rocket launch had been planned by North Korea to coincide with celebrations over the birth of the country's founder, Kim Il Sung, according to reports. Further reports following the launch indicated that the rocket broke apart soon after takeoff.
