Raw performance alone doesn't make a fund worth buying

Andy Gunter, mutual fund analyst at Morningstar Inc., says that investors need to look past performance to evaluate a fund's potential. In a radio interview, Gunter pointed to the successful Paradigm Value fund, noting that despite the fund's solid track record, it's a sell due to high costs. Likewise, MainStay Small Cap Opportunities earns a sell label due to conditions besides raw performance; in the small-cap space, Gunter recommended Royce Special Equity fund.
