Earnings season brings out volatility in stock prices, which can be lucrative if you’re targeting the right companies.

Shares of Yelp Inc. /zigman2/quotes/201334325/composite YELP +2.13%  were down 19% on Wednesday, after it lowered its sales outlook because of an outflow of local advertising customers.

Coverage of stock action usually focuses on the Dow Jones Industrial Average /zigman2/quotes/210598065/realtime DJIA +0.03%   and the S&P 500 /zigman2/quotes/210599714/realtime SPX +0.39% . But looking at the S&P 1500 Composite Index can shed light on more volatile companies. Yelp is not part of the S&P 1500, because the company has not met S&P Dow Jones Indices’ profitability criteria.

Nvidia Corp. /zigman2/quotes/200467500/composite NVDA +1.42% and Electronic Arts Inc. /zigman2/quotes/206954087/composite EA +0.16%  both reported excellent quarters. Nvidia’s data-center business is growing rapidly, offsetting a decline in gaming-related sales. Electronic Arts beat analysts’ estimates for earnings and for its outlook, setting up a number of price-target increases by analysts Wednesday.

Iconix beat sales estimates and pleased investors by announcing a deal to sell Peanuts and Strawberry Shortcake-branded products.
