MADRID (EFE Dow Jones) -- Spain's telecommunications giant Telefonica SA (TEF.MC) Monday named Miguel Gilperez as head of its underperforming Spanish operations.

Gilperez will replace Guillermo Ansaldo, as part of an operations revamp announced last week by Europe's second-largest telecom company by market value. Telefonica is looking to boost its online operations and made its Spanish unit, previously separate, a part of its European division.

Gilperez, who was previously the head of Telefonica Brazil, will report to the Chairman of Telefonica Europe, Jose Maria Alvarez Pallete.

Paulo Cesar Teixeira, until now head of Vivo Participacoes SA (VIV, VIVO4.BR), will replace Gilperez in Telefonica Brazil.
