The electric-car maker narrowed its loss in the second quarter and posted an adjusted per-share profit of 20 cents, as deliveries of its Model S cars beat its expectations. Groupon Inc. /zigman2/quotes/207356672/composite GRPN -1.65% shares rallied 25% to $10.88. The daily-deals website late Wednesday posted second-quarter sales that beat expectations and named Eric Lefkofsky as chief executive officer, months after firing co-founder Andrew Mason.
Cliffs Natural Resources Inc. /zigman2/quotes/205424168/composite CLF +2.11% led the S&P 500 index /zigman2/quotes/210599714/realtime SPX -0.16% with a 9% gain to $22.04. Short interest in the mining firm currently stands at more than 36% of shares outstanding and has been climbing all year. Shares hit their 52-week low of $15.41 in early July.
Shares of Newmont Mining Corp. /zigman2/quotes/205356474/composite NEM +0.93% rose 9% to $28.83, rebounding from Wednesday’s 52-week low of $26.43.
J.C. Penney Co. shares rose 7% to $13.71 on a report that the ailing retailer is looking to replace Chief Executive Mike Ullman at the insistence of activist investor Bill Ackman.
L Brands Inc. shares gained 5% to $60.34 after the retailer raised its second-quarter forecast and reported July same-store sales above estimates.
Smart Technologies Inc. shares surged 26% to $2.21. The company, which makes digital whiteboards, said late Wednesday its fiscal first-quarter profit jumped to $9.2 million from $1.5 million a year earlier.
Tesla shares soar after surprise earnings beat
Electric-car maker Tesla Motors reported second-quarter results that surpassed Wall Street expectations Wednesday, sending its shares higher in after-hours trading.
On its first day of trading, shares of Fox Factory Holding Corp. /zigman2/quotes/208878916/composite FOXF +0.85% jumped more than 24% to $18.63 a share after the maker of vehicle suspension products priced its initial public offering at $15 a share late Wednesday.
WageWorks Inc. shares jumped 20% to $40.17 after second-quarter results topped Wall Street estimates late Wednesday.
SunEdison Inc. shares rose 8% to $8 after the semiconductor and solar technology firm’s stock was raised to a buy from neutral by Bank of America Merrill Lynch.
Scientific Games Corp. shares rose nearly 7% to $14.35 after the gambling-products maker’s second-quarter revenue topped estimates.
Decliners
Dean Foods shares fell 7% to $10.21 after the dairy firm’s third-quarter earnings outlook fell short of the analyst consensus.
CenturyLink Inc. fell 5% to $34.50, making the stock the top decliner in the S&P 500. The telecommunications company late Wednesday reported a surge in second-quarter profit, but a decline in revenue and adjusted its full-year estimates.
Windstream Corp. shares dropped 3% to $8.35 after the telecom company reported a 22% decline in second-quarter earnings and reduced its full-year revenue forecast.
Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Inc. shares fell 2.5% $77.24. The company said late Wednesday its fiscal third-quarter profit jumped, but the increase in revenue missed analysts’ expectations.
Shares of SolarCity Corp. /zigman2/quotes/205874957/composite SCTY -99.60% fell 11% to $37.93. The solar company posted late Wednesday a narrower second-quarter loss and a 19% drop in revenue.
Crocs Inc. /zigman2/quotes/201458716/composite CROX +0.55% shares fell 5% to $13.32 after Sterne Agee downgraded the casual-footwear maker’s stock to underperform.
Tower Group International Ltd. shares dropped 24% to $16.43 after the insurer warned of potential record hits to its loss reserves.
Central Garden & Pet Co. /zigman2/quotes/207636516/composite CENT +0.50% /zigman2/quotes/206292828/composite CENTA +0.26% shares dropped 15% to $6.80 after the company’s fiscal third-quarter results fell well short of the Wall Street consensus.
Ion Geophysical Corp. shares fell 12% to $5.60 after the firm’s second-quarter results fell short of Street expectations.
