Equity Office swings to net loss in Q3 on higher taxes (12:08 AM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Equity Office Propertiessaid late Monday it swung to a loss in the third quarter on increased real estate taxes and reduced revenue from lower rents. The real estate holding company said its net loss was $129 million, or 32 cents a share. Last year, Equity earned $110.2 million, or 28 cents a share. Revenue for the quarter was $790.7 million vs. $778.1 million a year earlier. The company said third-quarter funds from operations were $44.5 million, or 11 cents a share, compared with $277.7 million, or 70 cents a share, a year ago. The company reaffirmed its 2004 and 2005 outlook. Equity expects to earn between 28 cents a share and 38 cents a share in 2004. Funds from operations for 2004 are expected to be in the range of $2.05 to $2.15 a share. For 2005, Equity sees earnings in the range of 65 cents to 75 cents a share. Funds from operations in 2005 are expected to be between $2.50 a share and $2.60 a share.

May Dept Stores Q3 sales up 16.8% to $3.48B (11:00 PM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- May Department Storessaid late Monday that sales rose 16.8 percent in the third-quarter, to $3.48 billion from $2.98 billion in the same period last year. For the month of October, sales increased almost 23 percent, to $1.09 billion from $887.3 million. Same-store sales fell 2.3 percent in October, the St. Louis-based retailer said in a statement, with dresses, coats, and intimate apparel among the weakest sellers. Excluding the remaining 15 stores May has left to divest, October same-store sales were down 2.2 percent.

Tesma Q3 net declines 23% (10:42 PM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Automobile engine and fuel system component maker Tesma Internationallate Monday said its third-quarter net income fell 23 percent to $12.3 million, or 38 cents a share, from $15.9 million, or 49 cents a share, in the same quarter last year, due to a dramatic rise in steel prices. On average, three analysts polled by Thomson First Call were expecting a profit of 45 cents a share. Sales rose 27 percent to $323.5 million. The company expects 2004 revenue to increase by 25 percent over the year-earlier total of $1.098 billion, equating to a projection of about $1.37 billion.

Ciphergen Q3 earns fall 82%, sales down 31% (9:31 PM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Ciphergen Biosystemsposted late Monday an 82-percent drop in third-quarter earnings and a 31-percent decrease in revenue, hurt by lower sales of its ProteinChip systems and its BioSepra Process Proteomics products. The Fremont, Calif.-based biotech company said it lost $9.5 million, or 33 cents a share, in the third quarter, on sales of $11 million. In the same period last year, Ciphergen lost $5.2 million, or 18 cents a share, on revenue of $16.1 million.

Document Sciences swings to Q3 profit (8:18 PM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Document Sciencessaid late Monday that it swung to a profit in the third quarter on higher licensing and service revenues. The Carlsbad, Calif.-based maker of document automation software said it made $205,461, or 4 cents a share, on sales of $6 million. Last year, Document Sciences lost $341,180, or 9 cents a share, on sales of $4.6 million.

XL Capital Q3 net drops on hurricane charge (7:07 PM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Insurance firm XL Capital Ltd.late Monday said its third-quarter net income fell to $22.5 million, or 16 cents a share, from $99 million, or 71 cents a share, in the same quarter last year. The figure includes a $420.1 million after-tax charge related to damage from a number of hurricanes during the period. Net investment income rose 33 percent to $253.1 million.

Smart & Final Q3 earns rise 12-fold (7:02 PM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Smart & Final Inc.said late Monday that that third-quarter earnings rose more than 12 times over the same period last year, boosted by a 12-percent rise in same-store sales. The food retailer said earnings were $11.7 million, or 36 cents a share, compared with $916,000, or 3 cents a share, a year earlier. Sales for the quarter were $603.2 million vs. $538.4 million a year ago.

Parkway Properties Q3 net drops (6:52 PM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Real estate firm Parkway Properties Inc.late Monday said its third-quarter net income declined to $2.6 million, or 23 cents a share, from $10.8 million, or 96 cents a share, in the same quarter last year. Funds from operations rose to $13.8 million, or $1.13 a share, from $13 million, or $1.14 a share. Revenue rose to $42.7 million from $35.8 million. For 2004, the company expects earnings in a range of $1.88 a share to $1.94 a share, and funds from operations of $4.43 a share to $4.49 a share. In 2005, the company expects a profit of $1.96 to $2.08 a share, and funds from operations of $4.37 to $4.57 a share.

Oneok Q3 net rises (6:44 PM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Natural gas distributor Oneok /zigman2/quotes/205201756/composite OKE +2.54% late Monday said its third-quarter net income soared to $20.8 million, or 19 cents a share, from $4.6 million, or 1 cent a share, in the same quarter last year. The per-share figure in the latest period topped by 1 cent the average estimate of analysts polled by Thomson First Call. Revenue rose to $1.73 billion from $568.3 million. The company raised its 2004 earnings outlook to a range of $2.25 a share to $2.31 a share from its previous estimate of $2.18 to $2.24 a share. Oneok also raised its 2005 earnings forecast to a range of $2.22 a share to $2.28 a share.

Direct General Corp Q3 earnings rise more than 22% (6:34 PM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Direct General Corp.said late Monday its third-quarter earnings rose more than 22 percent, despite $2.3 million in hurricane losses. The financial services company said earnings were $14.3 million, or 63 cents a share, compared with $11.7 million, or 58 cents a share, a year ago. The company said its hurricane losses reduced its earnings by about 9 cents a share. Revenue for the quarter was $123.8 million vs. $81.1 million a year earlier.

Primus Telecom shares rise 14% on Q3 profit (6:19 PM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Primus Telecommunications Groupshares rose as much as 14 percent to $2.13 late Monday, after posting a higher third-quarter profit. The company reported earnings of $16 million, or 16 cents per share, up from $5.8 million, or 6 cents per share, a year ago. Revenue for the quarter was $334 million, compared with $328 million in 2003.

Alpharma swings to Q3 loss (6:15 PM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Alpharma Inc.said late Monday that it swung to a loss in the third quarter, of $4.7 million, or 9 cents a share. Last year the company made $302,000, or 1 cent a share. Revenue fell 5.7 percent to $297.5 million from $315.4 million. The Fort Lee, N.J.-based generic drugmaker said it expects fourth-quarter earnings of 47 cents to 57 cents a share and fiscal 2004 earnings of 60 cents to 70 cents a share. Both forecasts include sales of gabapentin.

Odyssey Healthcare shares rise 11% on higher Q3 results (5:54 PM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Odyssey Healthcare Inc.shares rose as much as 11 percent to $8.93 late Monday, after posting higher third-quarter results. The company reported earnings of $9 million, or 24 cents per share, up from $7.8 million, or 21 cents per share, a year ago. Patient service revenue for the quarter was $86.5 million, compared with $71 million in 2003.

iVillage swings to Q3 profit (5:53 PM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Online women's media firm Ivillage Inc.late Monday said it swung to a third-quarter profit of $1.14 million, or 2 cents a share, from a loss of $9.27 million, or 17 cents a share, in the year-ago period. Revenue rose 23 percent to $16.7 million. The company said it expects to post fourth-quarter revenue in the range of $17.6 million and $18.2 million. For the full year 2004, revenue is expected to be up 20 percent to 21 percent from the 2003 total.

Willbros Group narrows Q3 loss on rising sales (5:51 PM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Willbros Groupsaid late Monday it narrowed its third-quarter loss on rising sales. The oil and gas contractor said its quarterly loss was $5 million, or 24 cents a share, compared with $8.7 million, or 42 cents a share, a year ago. Revenue for the quarter was $118.5 million vs. $91.5 million a year earlier. Willbros said for 2004 it expects to report a loss between 20 cents a share and 27 cents a share on revenue in the range of $450 million to $475 million.

G&K Services Q1 earns rise almost 18% (5:39 PM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- G&K Servicessaid late Monday its first-quarter earnings rose almost 18 percent. Earnings for the quarter were $9.5 million, or 45 cents a share, compared with $8.1 million, or 39 cents a share, a year earlier. Revenue for the quarter was $182.4 million vs. $178.6 million a year earlier. Looking ahead, G&K said it expects second-quarter earnings to be between 44 cents a share and 46 cents a share on revenue in the range of $187 million and $191 million.

Avanex Q1 loss narrows (5:34 PM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Fiber optic network equipment provider Avanex Corp.late Monday said that its first-quarter loss narrowed to $22.3 million, or 16 cents a share, from a loss of $27.9 million, or 26 cents a share, in the same quarter last year. Excluding a restructuring charge and other items, the company's loss was $18.7 million, or 13 cents a share, in the latest quarter. Revenue rose to $35.8 million from $18 million. The company said it expects fiscal second-quarter revenue to be about 12 percent higher than the first-quarter figure, equivalent to about $40.1 million.

CommScope Q3 earns rise almost 14 times over year ago (5:28 PM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- CommScope Inc. /zigman2/quotes/210140868/composite CTV 0.00% said Monday after the bell that third-quarter earnings rose almost 14 times over the same quarter last year on sales that more than doubled. The company said earnings were $15.1 million, or 27 cents a share, compared with $1.1 million, or 2 cents a share, a year ago. Sales for the quarter were $309.1 million vs. $148.7 million a year earlier. Analysts polled by Thomson First Call were looking for third-quarter earnings of 20 cents a share on revenue of $309 million. CommScope said it expects fourth-quarter sales to be between $270 million and $285 million.

Principal Financial Q3 net jumps 62% (5:17 PM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Principal Financial Group /zigman2/quotes/201030797/composite PFG +2.80% said late Monday that third-quarter net income jumped 62 percent to $298.8 million, or 95 cents per share, from $184.5 million, or 57 cents a share, a year earlier. Operating earnings, which exclude realized investment gains and losses, came in at $205.2 million, or 66 cents per share, up from $167.3 million, or 52 cents a share, a year ago, the firm said. The company said it's in a position to exceed its long-term earnings-per-share growth target of 11 percent to 13 percent a year. Principal Financial said it hasn't received a subpoena from New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer, but does pay contingent commissions and has begun an internal investigation which to date has uncovered no instances of bid-rigging.

Insightful swings to profit in Q3 (5:14 PM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Insightful Corp.late Monday reported third-quarter earnings of $609 million, or 5 cents per share. Last year, the company posted a loss of $990 million, or 9 cents per share. Revenue for the quarter was $4.8 million, compared with $4 million in 2003. The company forecast fourth-quarter revenue to be flat to slightly above last year's reported revenue.

Sykes Enterprises Q3 earnings fall on declining sales (5:02 PM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Sykes Enterprises /zigman2/quotes/200398258/composite SYKE +1.26% said Monday after the bell that third-quarter earnings fell on declining sales. Earnings for the quarter were $1.1 million, or 3 cents a share, compared with $3.9 million, or 10 cents a share, a year earlier. Revenue for the quarter was $111.5 million vs. $119.9 million a year earlier. For the fourth quarter, the company expects earnings in the range of breakeven to 2 cents a share on revenue between $110 million and $115 million. Sykes said for 2004 it sees earnings between 6 cents a share and 8 cents a share on revenue between $456 million to $461 million.

CallWave Q1 net rises 21% (4:55 PM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Internet telephony provider CallWave Inc.late Monday said its fiscal first-quarter net income rose to $2.9 million, or 17 cents a share, from $2.3 million, or 15 cents a share, in the year-ago period. Revenue rose 27 percent to $11 million. CallWave said it had 823,000 subscribers at the end of the latest period, up 41,000 from the previous quarter.

Macrovision posts $1.3 million Q3 profit (4:54 PM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Macrovisionon Monday reported a third-quarter profit of $1.3 million, or 3 cents a share, on $48.9 million in revenue. Excluding charges, the maker of electronic-licensing and copy-protection technologies earned $11.2 million, or 22 cents a share. Analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call estimated the company would earn 19 cents a share on $46 million in revenue.

Axsys Technologies posts higher Q3 results (4:51 PM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Axsys Technologies Inc.late Monday reported third-quarter earnings of $1.9 million, or 27 cents per share, up from $1.2 million, or 17 cents per share, a year ago. Revenue for the quarter was $26.4 million, compared with $21.2 million in 2003. The company forecast 2004 revenue of $102 million.

Digirad swings to Q3 profit (4:48 PM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Medical imaging products maker Digirad Corp. /zigman2/quotes/205658860/composite DRAD +21.00% late Monday said its third-quarter profit was $400,000, or 2 cents a share. In the year-ago period, the company's loss was $31,279, or $2.05 a share, on far fewer shares outstanding. Revenue rose to $17.2 million from $14 million. The company sees 2004 earnings in a range of 1 cent a share to 3 cents a share, on revenue of $67 million to $70 million.

SRA Q1 net income rises 59% (4:45 PM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- SRA Internationalsaid after the bell that first-quarter net income rose 59 percent on increased backlog orders. Earnings for the quarter were $12.4 million, or 45 cents a share, compared with $7.8 million, or 29 cents a share, a year ago. Revenue for the quarter was $203.5 million vs. $132 million a year earlier. SRA said it expects second-quarter earnings to be between 44 cents a share and 46 cents a share on revenue in the range of $197 million to $202 million. The company said for 2005 it sees earnings between $1.82 a share and $1.92 a share on revenue in the range of $800 million to $830 million.

Nuvelo gets rights to arterial drug from Amgen (4:38 PM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Nuvelo Inc.late Monday said it has obtained worldwide rights to develop and market alfimeprase, a drug used to prevent blood clots in the legs, from Amgen Inc. /zigman2/quotes/209157011/composite AMGN -1.05% in exchange for certain milestone and royalty payments. No further financial terms were disclosed. In Phase II trials of the drug, alfimeprase was found to have a 76-percent potential for breaking up blood clots, and to be able to restore arterial flow at rates of up to 60 percent. The drug was also seen as safe and well tolerated, Nuvelo said.

National Semiconductor cuts Q2 targets (4:37 PM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- National Semiconductorlowered its fiscal second-quarter financial targets due to weak demand and high inventory, the analog chipmaker announced late Monday. Sales are now expected to be between $445 million and $450 million, down almost 20 percent sequentially compared with a targeted drop of 8 to 10 percent.

Mapics Q4 earns up over 300% (4:35 PM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Mapics Inc.late Monday reported fourth-quarter earnings of $4.1 million, or 16 cents per share, up from $893,000, or 8 cents per share, a year ago. Revenue for the quarter was $44 million, down slightly from $45 million in 2004. The company expects to report earnings between 50 cents and 55 cents per share in 2005.

Compudyne swings to loss in Q3, misses Wall Street (4:32 PM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Compudyne Corp.said after the bell it swung to a loss in the third quarter on declining sales. The company's third-quarter loss was $1.9 million, or 23 cents a share. A year ago Compudyne had earnings of $982,000, or 12 cents a share. Revenue for the quarter was $33.4 million vs. $51.1 million a year earlier. Analysts polled by Thomson First Call were expecting a third-quarter loss of 5 cents a share on revenue of $39 million.

Forest Labs sees 2005 profit below First Call consensus (4:26 PM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Forest Labssaid Monday that it expects 2005 earnings of $2.50 a share. A survey of 29 analysts, according to Thomson First Call, forecast a profit of $2.61 a share, with a range of $2.41 to $2.83 a share.

Scientific Games posts higher Q3 results, ups 2004 view (4:26 PM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Scientific Games Corp. /zigman2/quotes/202731508/composite SGMS +3.59% late Monday reported third-quarter earnings of $21.5 million, or 24 cents per share, up from $13.2 million, or 15 cents per share, a year ago. Revenue for the quarter was $179 million, compared with $132 million in 2003. The company raised its forecast for 2004, with an earnings estimate of 84 cents to 88 cents per share, up from 78 cents to 83 cents per share, and a revenue forecast of $715 million to $725 million, up from its earlier outlook of $690 million to $720 million.

Rudolph Tech Q3 net rises (4:26 PM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Rudolph Technologies Inc.late Monday said its third-quarter net income rose to $2.19 million, or 13 cents a share, from $465,000, or 3 cents a share, in the year-ago period. Revenue rose to $21.8 million from $14.2 million. The maker of semiconductor manufacturing equipment said it expects fourth-quarter earnings in the range of 9 cents a share to 11 cents a share, on revenue that should be flat to 5 percent above the third-quarter total, or about $22.9 million.

FBL Financial third-quarter net income slips 2% (4:22 PM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- FBL Financial /zigman2/quotes/203813833/composite FFG +3.79% said late Monday that third-quarter net income slid 2 percent to $14.4 million, or 49 cents per share, from $14.7 million, or 51 cents a share, a year earlier. Operating earnings, which excludes realized investment gains and losses, came in at $14.2 million, or 49 cents a share, the life insurance, annuity and mutual fund firm said. FBL maintained its full-year 2004 net income and operating income guidance of $1.80 to $1.90 per share.

Protein Design reports narrowed Q3 loss (4:21 PM ET) BOSTON (CBS.MW) -- Protein Design Laboratories /zigman2/quotes/202032737/composite PDLI +0.63% reported a narrowed third-quarter loss of $13.6 million, or 14 cents a share, compared with a loss of $18.9 million, or 20 cents a share for the same period a year ago. Revenue for the quarter jumped 112 percent to $19.8 million, compared with $9.3 million last year. The adjusted net loss for the quarter was $12.6 million, or 13 cents a share, for the quarter. A poll of analysts by Thomson First Call estimated the company would post an adjusted loss of 21 cents, with revenue of 18 million.

Kronos Inc Q4 earns rise 51% (4:17 PM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Kronos Inc.said after the bell Monday that fourth-quarter net income rose 51 percent to $18.1 million, or 56 cents a share, from $12 million, or 38 cents a share, a year ago. Revenue for the quarter was $128.3 million vs. $112.9 million a year earlier. The software company said it expects first-quarter earnings to be between 26 cents a share and 28 cents a share on revenue in the range of $111 million to $115 million. Kronos said for 2005 it expects earnings in the range of $1.58 to $1.65 a share on revenue between $500 million and $510 million.

Hutchinson Technology earns drop in Q4 (4:16 PM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Hutchinson Technologylate Monday reported fourth-quarter earnings of $4.95 million, or 18 cents per share, down from $15.4 million, or 51 cents per share, a year ago. Revenue for the quarter was $122.2 million, compared with $121 million in 2003. Analysts polled by Thomson First Call had forecast earnings of 19 cents per share, on revenue of $122 million. For 2005, the company expects to report earnings between 35 cents and 45 cents per share, with revenue of $125 million to $140 million.

Maxim Integrated Q1 earns 42c, sales $435 mln (4:10 PM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Maxim Integrated Products /zigman2/quotes/201861354/composite MXIM +0.32% reported fiscal first-quarter net income of $144.5 million, or 42 cents a share, on sales of $435 million compared with net income of $87.4 million, or 25 cents a share, on sales of $310.2 million during the same quarter last year. Analysts had expected earnings of 42 cents a share and sales of $454 million, on average, according to Thomson First Call. Also, Maxim boosted its quarterly dividend payment to 10 cents a share from 8 cents a share.
