Western Digital Corp. /zigman2/quotes/204213617/composite WDC +1.72% named a Cisco Systems Inc. /zigman2/quotes/209509471/composite CSCO +4.88% executive as its next chief executive Thursday afternoon. David Goeckeler, who had been serving as an executive vice president and general manager at Cisco, will take over as CEO and join the board of the storage company on March 9. "With experience as a software engineer as well as running large semiconductor development projects, his breadth of technology expertise, business acumen and history of building and operating world-class organizations make him the right person to lead Western Digital in a world increasingly driven by applications and data," board chairman Matthew Massengill said in Thursday's announcement . Goeckeler will replace Steve Milligan, who announced in October that he planned to retire; Milligan plans to remain at the company as an adviser through September.
