The economy

Weekly jobless claims fell for a fifth-straight week, retail sales were solid in December, the Philadelphia Federal Index jumped to its highest level in eight months and import prices rose 0.3%. Business inventories and a home builders index are still to come.

Shares of Morgan Stanley /zigman2/quotes/209104354/composite MS -0.45%  are rising after the bank’s earnings and revenue beat forecasts. Signet Jewelers /zigman2/quotes/204614427/composite SIG -0.66%  shares are climbing after the jewelry retailer lifted its outlook. Brokerage Charles Schwab /zigman2/quotes/201281754/composite SCHW -0.28% missed profit forecasts and the stock is down.

Earnings previews: IBM

Late on Wednesday, aluminum producer Alcoa /zigman2/quotes/200686102/composite AA -2.85% reported a bigger-than-expected quarterly loss and disappointing sales.

Apple /zigman2/quotes/202934861/composite AAPL -0.10%  chip maker Taiwan Semiconductor /zigman2/quotes/207385621/delayed TW:2330 -0.68%  posted a profit gain and higher sales, news that has boosted related European stocks.

Tesla /zigman2/quotes/203558040/composite TSLA +3.62%  shares are falling on reports Morgan Stanley downgraded the electric-car maker.
