The broad-market S&P 500 on Tuesday posted its first back-to-back gains, with all 11 sectors finishing higher. The S&P 500 index /zigman2/quotes/210599714/realtime SPX +1.00% ended the day with a gain of 2.1% to reach about 4,687, on a preliminary basis, representing the best day for the benchmark since March 1, powered by an advance in information technology /zigman2/quotes/207444675/composite XLK +2.66% energy /zigman2/quotes/206420077/composite XLE -1.09% , and consumer discretionary shares /zigman2/quotes/200844504/composite XLY +0.84% .
