House Republicans on Friday tapped Rep. Elise Stefanik to serve as their No. 3 leader, with the New York congresswoman taking the job that Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming held until two days ago.

Stefanik, an ally of former President Donald Trump, had been favored to get the position of House Republican Conference chair.

House Republicans voted Wednesday in favor of ejecting Cheney from the leadership role, in a move that had been in the works for weeks following her criticism of Trump.

The switch to Stefanik from Cheney, whose father is former Vice President Dick Cheney, has been viewed as a sign of how much control Trump still has over the GOP, as well as an effort by the party to keep the 45th president’s supporters on their side ahead of next year’s midterm elections.

Rep. Chip Roy of Texas challenged Stefanik for the House Republican leadership post, but Trump said in a statement on Thursday that he supports Stefanik “by far” over Roy. Trump congratulated Stefanik in a statement on Friday, saying the House GOP “is united and the Make America Great Again movement is Strong!”
