Roy Weitz, founder of FundAlarm.com, says that if a big-name manager attracts you to a fund to be sure to get what you are paying for. In a radio interview, Weitz noted that Third Avenue Value shareholders buy the fund because of Marty Whitman, but said the 82-year-old manager can't run the fund forever, which should color the decision for future buyers. Likewise, John Montgomery of the Bridgeway funds runs terrific small-cap funds, but Weitz warned against buying the firm's large-cap offerings.
