A group of hundreds of major U.S. companies and executives have signed a new statement opposing "any discriminatory legislation" that would make it harder for people to vote, and published it in a two-page ad in the New York Times on Wednesday. The companies include Amazon.com Inc. /zigman2/quotes/210331248/composite AMZN +1.94% , Alphabet's Google /zigman2/quotes/202490156/composite GOOGL +2.21% /zigman2/quotes/205453964/composite GOOG +2.40% and Starbucks /zigman2/quotes/207508890/composite SBUX +0.64% . Famed investor Warren Buffett of Berkshire Hathaway /zigman2/quotes/200060694/composite BRK.B +1.32% also signed on. The move comes after a number of voting-related proposals from Republican state lawmakers, notably in Georgia, that have caused controversy and ignited protests from a range of constituencies. Republican leaders have responded by telling companies to stay out of politics -- but not to stop financing political campaigns. The statement was put together over the past week and a half and led by Ken Chenault, a former chief executive of American Express /zigman2/quotes/203805826/composite AXP +1.99% and Ken Frazier, CEO of Merck & Co. /zigman2/quotes/209956077/composite MRK -0.51% , according to the Times. The paper notes some notable omissions from the list, including Coca-Cola Co. /zigman2/quotes/209159848/composite KO +0.40% and Delta /zigman2/quotes/200327741/composite DAL +5.32% , two key businesses that are headquartered in Atlanta and were among the first to condemn the Georgia bill. JPMorgan Chase /zigman2/quotes/205971034/composite JPM +1.55% and its CEO, Jamie Dimon, also declined to sign the statement, even after Dimon's annual letter to shareholders last weekhighlighted his concerns about inequality, the widening wealth gap and the protests that followed the death of George Floyd last year.
