This $3-a-month fitness program gives you live trainer feedback during workouts. Here’s what happened when I tried it

Online fitness classes are a dime a dozen, and it seems like every outlet from Peleton to Obe offers some sort of subscription-based class network. But when I sampled OpenFit, which is now on sale for $75 for a two-year subscription with code OPENFIT25 — that’s just over $3 per month — it stood out to me. There are over 450 fitness classes every week, but my favorite part was the live, but optional, instructor feedback during classes so you know whether you’re doing it right. (After all, you could have been doing Pilates for months but have the wrong form so it doesn’t work as well as it should.) OpenFit also offers an easy-to-use nutrition tracker and meal planner. Here’s the scoop on the pros and cons of OpenFit.

What are the classes like?: I liked the selection of classes — options include strength training, barre and pilates, yoga, kickboxing and stretching, for all levels — and the ability to get feedback from the instructor. A weekly schedule highlights classes — taught by certified trainers, athletes and professional dancers — offered for the next seven days along with a star rating from people who have previously taken that class. Popular classes like 10-minute abs have more than 33,000 reviews and a 4.9 out of 5-star rating. With a schedule provided a week in advance, you can reserve a spot in any available class, which is then added to your workout queue on your dashboard. There are a lot of instructors and classes to choose from, so workouts never felt stale to me.

You can take them on-demand, of course, but you won’t get instructor feedback. I’ve noticed that early morning and weekend classes tend to fill up fastest, while midday and evening options remain open until closer to their start time. And if using a laptop or iPhone, it can be a little tricky to make sure your camera is correctly positioned so that your entire body is captured; you learn quickly, but it’s not immediate.

How does instructor feedback work? When entering a live class, camera access is required so that a selfie can be provided as a profile image for that specific class, and then live trainer feedback is automatically enabled. Once in the virtual studio, users are given the option to participate with their camera on or off; turn your camera on during the workout, and the instructor is the only one who can see you and they can then provide constructive feedback. You can also simply opt to take one of the on-demand schedules that fit into your schedule. Live classes are offered from 5am to 10pm, so that’s nearly always an option.

What if I lose motivation? OpenFit also offers result-driven programs like the three-week “Ab + Band Bootcamp,” “Yoga52 4-week Challenge,” “XB Pilates 21-Day” intensives and more, for people who perform better under pressure or knowing they’re part of a set program with daily commitments. 

There are options to set weekly fitness goals to hold yourself accountable, and you can earn badges depending on how many classes you’ve completed, how many miles you’ve run and how many programs you’ve participated in. The site keeps track of your stats by recording a log of all the classes you’ve completed.

What about that nutrition planner? There’s a recipes tab that features snacks, protein supplement recipes and meals ready in under 15-minutes, like seven-minute vegetable soup, grilled mozzarella sandwiches with tomato and basil and citrus shrimp cocktail. In addition to including calorie counts for their recipes, Openfit’s app can keep a log of what you eat, your shopping list, and your daily calorie intake.

My verdict: If you’re looking for an encouraging way to workout in the comfort of your own home while receiving feedback and critique from a professional, this is a great way to get or stay in shape and build healthy workout habits. But if you’re someone who is already motivated to workout, and knows your form is good, this is probably a skip.
