Nearly $29 billion in market cap wiped from Amazon's new rivals in grocery space

Amazon's /zigman2/quotes/210331248/composite AMZN -5.14% dramatic push into the grocery space with its planned acquisition of Whole Foods has wiped nearly $29 billion from the aggregate market cap of rivals in the grocery category. Wal-Mart Stores /zigman2/quotes/207374728/composite WMT -1.41% lost over $14 billion in market value, Costco's /zigman2/quotes/201191698/composite COST -2.73% market cap fell by more than $5 billion, and Target /zigman2/quotes/207799045/composite TGT -3.40% and Kroger /zigman2/quotes/206215053/composite KR -0.55% each saw a reduction of more than $3 billion. U.S.-listed shares of Ahold Delhaize /zigman2/quotes/204393693/delayed ADRNY -0.19% , which owns U.S. chains including Giant and Food Lion, saw its value drop by nearly $2 billion. Smaller rivals including Supervalu , Sprouts /zigman2/quotes/209197151/composite SFM -1.55% and Weis Markets /zigman2/quotes/200514880/composite WMK -0.53% also nursed heavy losses.
