The S&P 500 energy sector fell 3.4% on Monday as oil futures pulled back and the broader stock market declined.

West Texas Intermediate crude oil for October delivery /zigman2/quotes/211629951/delayed CL.1 +0.72% fell 5.5% to settle at $91.64 a barrel. Myra P. Saefong covered several factors that helped push oil lower , including a report that the OPEC+ group wasn’t discussing oil-production cuts.
The S&P 500 /zigman2/quotes/210599714/realtime SPX -0.19% was down 1.1%, with 86% of component stocks and all sectors ending lower. Investors were poised to react negatively to news underlining the strength of the U.S. economy on expectations the Federal Reserve would respond with tighter monetary policy.
