Cabot Oil & Gas quarterly profit falls 45%

(7:13 PM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Cabot Oil & Gas Corp.late Thursday reported fourth-quarter net earnings of $32.1 million, or 67 cents per basic share, down 45% from $58.5 million, or $1.20 per basic share, in the year-ago period. Revenue at the Houston-based company fell to $171.7 million from $225.1 millin. The company said the lower results were due to a 19% decline in realized natural gas prices, partially offset by increased oil prices, and a decline in Gulf Coast region production due to an asset sale.

Hittite Microwave quarterly profit nearly doubles

(5:49 PM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Hittite Microwave Corp.after Thursday's closing bell reported fourth-quarter net earnings of $12.1 million, or 39 cents a share, up from $7.11 million, or 23 cents a share, during the year-ago period. The Chelmsford, Mass.-based maker of integrated circuits and modules posted revenue of $35.4 million vs. $22.7 million. Analysts polled by Thomson Financial had forecast fourth-quarter earnings of 34 cents a share on revenue of $34.8 million. Additionally, Hittite said it expects first-quarter earnings of 36 cents to 38 cents a share on revenue of $35 million to $36 million.

Bsquare swings to quarterly profit; revenue rises 11%

(5:13 PM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Bsquare Corp. /zigman2/quotes/204540314/composite BSQR +0.84% after Thursday's closing bell reported fourth-quarter net earnings of $706,000, or 7 cents a share. During the same period a year ago, the company posted a net loss of $246,000, or 3 cents a share. Revenue at the Bellevue, Wash.-based software company rose 11% to $14.1 million from $12.7 million. Software gross margin was 22% for the quarter, compared with 18.8% a year ago. Additionally, Bsquare said it expects first quarter total revenue to increase about 5% sequentially and 28% year-over-year, driven by increases in all three revenue components.

Career Education quarterly income falls; revenue declines

(4:55 PM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Career Education Corp.after Thursday's closing bell said fourth-quarter net income fell, as revenue declined, to $20.7 million, or 21.5 cents a share, from $70.3 million, or 70.1 cents a share, during the same period in the prior year. Analysts polled by Thomson Financial had expected per-share income of 37 cents. The for-profit education provider said quarterly revenue fell to $429.1 million from $479.6 million in the prior ear.

TTM Technologies quarterly earnings fall; updates outlook

(4:53 PM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- TTM Technologies Inc. /zigman2/quotes/210395673/composite TTMI +0.15% after Thursday's closing bell reported fourth-quarter net earnings of $4.91 million, or 12 cents a share, down from $19 million, or 46 cents a share, during the year-ago period. Santa Ana, Calif.-based TTM, which makes circuit boards for electronic equipment, posted revenue of $144.3 million vs. $63.1 million. The results include two months of the operations of the Printed Circuit Group, which TTM acquired from Tyco International Ltd.on Oct. 27. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial had forecast fourth-quarter earnings of 16 cents a share on revenue of $145 million. The gross margins were 18.9% vs. 23.8% a year ago. Additionally, TTM said it expects first-quarter per-share earnings of 13 cents to 18 cents on revenue of $168 million to $174 million.

Mohawk Industries quarterly income rises; revenue gains

(4:44 PM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Mohawk Industries Inc. /zigman2/quotes/207248913/composite MHK -0.95% after Thursday's closing bell said fourth-quarter net income rose, as revenue gained, to $129.5 million, or $1.90 a share, from $99.6 million, or $1.47 a share, during the same period in the prior year. The flooring supplier said quarterly revenue increased to $1.9 billion from $1.8 billion in the prior year. Analysts polled by Thomson Financial were looking for revenue of $1.92 billion. Mohawk added that is sees continued slow U.S. industry sales in the first quarter, and expects earnings of $1.01 to $1.10 per share.

California Pizza net climbs on higher sales

(4:41 PM ET) LOS ANGELES (MarketWatch) -- California Pizza Kitchensaid late Thursday that fourth-quarter net income was $3.73 million, or 19 cents a share, compared with $3.48 million, or 17 cents a share, for the same period a year ago. Reporting after the close, the company said revenue was $146 million vs. last year's $125.4 million. Analysts polled by Thomson Financial had forecast earnings of 16 cents a share for the quarter on sales of $145 million. The company also said it signed a franchise deal to open restaurants in Mexico and a letter of intent to expand to South Korea. Shares ended the day down 9 cents to $35.26. Shares fell another $1.06 to $34.20 in after-hours dealings.

ArthroCare quarterly profit dips slightly; revenue rises

(4:38 PM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- ArthroCare Corp.after Thursday's closing bell reported fourth-quarter net earnings of $8.17 million, or 29 cents a share, compared with $8.36 million, or 31 cents a share, during the year-ago period. Excluding charges, among other items, earnings were $9.58 million, or 34 cents a share. The Austin, Texas-based medical device company posted total revenue of $69.8 million vs. $59.3 million. Analysts polled by Thomson Financial had forecast fourth-quarter earnings of 32 cents a share on revenue of $70 million. Additionally, ArthroCare said it expects fiscal 2007 earnings of $1.40 to $1.50 a share, and total revenue growth of 20% for the year.

Buffalo Wild Wings quarterly income rises; revenue gains

(4:37 PM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Buffalo Wild Wings Inc.after Thursday's closing bell said quarterly net income rose, as revenue gained, to $6.8 million, or 77 cents a share, from $2.62 million, or 30 cents a share, during the same period in the prior year. Analysts polled by Thomson Financial were looking for per-share earnings of 53 cents. The Minneapolis-based operator of restaurants said quarterly revenue rose to $83.3 million from $59 million in the prior year, while Wall Street was looking for $81 million.

Allied Waste profit drops to break-even

(4:31 PM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Allied Waste Industries Inc.reported late Thursday fourth-quarter net income of $9.8 million, or break-even measured in per-share results, down from $66.7 million, or 15 cents a share, a year ago. Revenue for the three months ended Dec. 31 rose to $1.49 billion from $1.47 billion in the year-ago quarter. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial had expected the Phoenix, Ariz.-based garbage hauler and recycler to post earnings of 14 cents a share on $1.52 billion in revenue. The company said it sees 3% to 4% revenue growth in 2007. Allied Waste shares rose 2 cents to close at $12.80 ahead of the report.

Denny's swings to quarterly income; expenses decline

(4:29 PM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Denny's Corp. /zigman2/quotes/206956394/composite DENN -0.85% after Thursday's closing bell said it swung to net income in the fourth-quarter of $2.27 million, or 2 cents a share, as operating costs and expenses declined. During the same period in the prior year, the restaurant operator reported a net loss of $4.5 million, or 5 cents a share. Analysts polled by Thomson Financial had expected per-share income of a penny. Denny's said quarterly revenue rose to $244.4 million from $243.4 million in the prior year, while Wall Street was looking for $248 million. For 2007, Denny's sees a "modest revenue decline."

Sonic Solutions posts partial quarterly results

(4:27 PM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Sonic Solutions Inc.after Thursday's closing bell reported preliminary third-quarter net revenue of $39.1 million. Analysts polled by Thomson Financial are currently forecasting revenue of $41 million for the period. The Novato, Calif.-based software company said its selected results and outlook may be adjusted as a result of a possible options-related restatement of results. The company said it hasn't determined the amount of non-charges for stock-based compensation expense it expects to incur, but plans to file restated results as soon as possible. Additionally, Sonic said it sees fourth-quarter net revenue of between $37 million and $41 million.

Agilent Technologies quarterly income falls

(4:19 PM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Agilent Technologies Inc. /zigman2/quotes/207081878/composite A +0.45% after Thursday's closing bell said first-quarter net income fell to $150 million, or 36 cents a share, from $2.82 million, or $5.83 a share, during the same period in the prior year that included a benefit of $901 million on the Lumileds sale. Before items, quarterly per-share income rose to 39 cents from 32 cents in the prior year. Analysts polled by Thomson Financial had expected per-share earnings of 39 cents. The measurement company said quarterly net revenue rose to $1.28 billion from $1.17 billion in the prior year. For the fiscal second quarter, Agilent sees revenue of $1.3 billion to $1.34 billion, with adjusted net income of 41 cents to 45 cents per share. Analysts are looking for per-share income of 45 cents.

Ingram Micro earnings rise almost 9%

(4:14 PM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Ingram Micro Inc.on Thursday reported a fiscal fourth-quarter profit of $91.7 million, or 53 cents a share, on revenue of $8.85 billion. During the same period a year ago, the technology products distributor earned $84.4 million, or 51 cents a share, on $7.96 billion in revenue. Excluding $6.7 million, or 3 cents a share, for stock-based compensation expenses, Ingram Micro would have earned 56 cents a share. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial had forecast the company to earn 53 cents a share on $8.55 billion in revenue.

TheStreet.com shares rally following strong earnings report

(12:36 PM ET) NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- TheStreet.comshares leapt almost 9% to $11.24 in midday action on Thursday after the New York City-based financial news and commentary provider posted fourth-quarter earnings of $4 million, or 14 cents a share, up from a year-ago profit of $1.8 million, or 7 cents a share. On a non-GAAP (generally accepted accounting principles) basis, excluding $400,000 in stock compensation expense, the company said it earned 16 cents a share in the latest quarter. Revenue rose 44% in the latest three months to $14.4 million from $10 million in the same period a year earlier. The average estimate of analysts polled by Thomson Financial was for a profit of 13 cents a share in the December period. The company said page views rose to 880 million in 2006, an 80% increase from 2005.

Thomas Weisel Partners down 2.5% after earnings report

(12:00 PM ET) NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Thomas Weisel Partners Groupfell 2.5% to $19.63 despite better-than-expected earnings of 37 cents a share from the banking firm vs. the expected level of 24 cents a share. Analyst Richard Repetto of Sandler O'Neill said the outperformance was driven by asset management fees and a lower tax rate. "It's a beat, but earnings quality (is) suspect," Repetto said in a note to clients. Expenses rose on compensation demands. Repetto lowered his 2007 profit estimate by 8 cents a share to 96 cents a share, based on an expected higher tax rate.

FTI Consulting quarterly profit dips; shares rise

(11:08 AM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- FTI Consulting Inc. /zigman2/quotes/210037752/composite FCN +0.77% shares rose 13% to $32.72 in Thursday morning trade after the Baltimore-based company posted fourth-quarter net earnings of $17.4 million, or 42 cents a share, down from $18.3 million, or 46 cents a share, in the year-ago period. Revenue in the three months ended Dec. 31 rose to $216.8 million from $165.7 million. Analysts polled by Thomson Financial were expecting a per-share profit of 37 cents on revenue of $194.4 million. FTI expects 2007 earnings of $1.74 to $1.84 a share. Analysts are looking for earnings of $1.76 a share.

Spartan Motors' quarterly profit surges; shares rise

(10:41 AM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Spartan Motors Inc.shares surged 19% to $20.05 in Thursday morning trade after the Charlotte, Mich.-based maker of chassis and vehicles reported fourth-quarter net earnings of $3.28 million, or 16 cents a share, up from $986,000, or 5 cents a share, last year. The 2006 fourth quarter included a non-cash charge of $2.1 million, 10 cents a share, related to a write-off of goodwill for Spartan's ambulance subsidiary, Road Rescue. Revenue rose to $123.6 million from $75.5 million. Analysts polled by Thomson Financial were expecting a per-share profit of 17 cents on $102.3 million.

Network Appliance shares rise 4% after earnings report

(10:31 AM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Network Appliance Inc. /zigman2/quotes/209297588/composite NTAP +2.24% shares rose more than 4% Thursday after the storage-technology company reported third-quarter results that execeded Wall Street analysts' estimates. NetApp's stock rose $1.59 a share to $40 following the company's report in which it earned $66.5 million, or 17 cents a share, on revenue of $729.3 million. Excluding one-time items, NetApp would have earned $111.1 million, or 29 cents a share, while analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial had forecast a profit of 28 cents a share on $703.8 million in revenue. Brokerage Friedman, Billigs & Ramsey raised its rating on NetApp's stock to outperform from market perform.

TRX shares tumble on fourth-quarter results, outlook

(10:28 AM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- TRX Inc.shares tumbled 31% to $4.50 in Thursday morning trade after the Atlanta-based software company reported a fourth-quarter net profit of $1.32 million, or 7 cents a share, up from $302,000, or 2 cents a share, last year. Revenue rose to $27.4 million from $27 million. Analysts polled by Thomson Financial were expecting a per-share profit of 2 cents on revenue of $23.7 million. TRX expects 2007 results, excluding items, in the range of a loss of 10 cents to breakeven on a per-share basis and revenues excluding client reimbursements of $85 to $90 million.

Stratasys quarterly profit rises; shares climb

(10:20 AM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Stratasys Inc. /zigman2/quotes/207628786/composite SSYS -0.87% shares jumped 20% to $39 in Thursday morning trade after the Minneapolis-based maker of rapid prototyping devices and 3-D printing systems reported fourth-quarter net earnings of $3.65 million, or 35 cents a share, up from $3.15 million, or 30 cents a share, last year. Excluding stock-based compensation expense, profit came in at 38 cents a share. Revenue rose to $29.7 million from $23.5 million. Analysts polled by Thomson Financial were expecting a per-share profit of 36 cents on revenue of $27.6 million. Stratasys forecast 2007 earnings of $1.28 to $1.40 a share, or $1.37 to $1.49 a share excluding items, on revenue of $105 million to $110 million.

Techwell quarterly profit jumps; shares fall

(10:15 AM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Techwell Inc.shares fell 11% to $14.23 in Thursday morning trade after the San Jose, Calif.-based fabless semiconductor company late Wednesday reported a fourth-quarter net profit of $4.85 million, or 22 cents a share, up from $1.76 million, or 9 cents a share, last year. Revenue rose to $16 million from $10.8 million. Analysts polled by Thomson Financial were expecting a per-share profit of 21 cents.

Chordiant shares rise on quarterly results, outlook

(10:11 AM ET) SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Chordiant Software Inc.shares surged 12% to $3.70 in Thursday morning trade. Late Wednesday, the Cupertino, Calif.-based company reported a fiscal first-quarter net loss of $10.7 million, or 14 cents a share, vs. a net loss of $1.77 million, or 2 cents a share, last year. Excluding certain items, the company posted a loss of $2.7 million, or 3 cents a share. Revenue rose to $22.9 million from $22.6 million. Analysts polled by Thomson Financial were expecting a per-share loss of 2 cents on revenue of $24.7 million. Chordiant raised its fiscal 2007 revenue forecast to a range of $120 million to $125 million.

CenturyTel fourth-quarter net $72.2 mln vs $78.3 mln

(9:30 AM ET) NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- CenturyTelThursday said its fourth-quarter net income fell to $72.2 million from $78.3 million, a year ago. On a per-share basis, earnings rose to 62 cents a share from 59 cents a year ago due to a higher number of shares outstanding in the year-ago quarter. Excluding items, earnings were 68 cents a share for the current quarter. A Thomson Financial survey of analysts, on average, predicted earnings of 64 cents a share for the quarter. Analysts estimates usually exclude items. The Monroe, La., integrated communications company revenue fell 2.1% to $607.7 million from $620.5 million. The company expects first-quarter earnings excluding items of 60 cents to 65 cents a share on revenue of $600 million to $610 million. Analysts forecast earnings of 63 cents a share for the quarter. Centurytel sees 2007 earnings excluding items of $2.60 to $2.70 a share. Wall Street projects earnings of $2.71 a share for the year.

Ameren fourth-quarter profit $61 mln vs $20 mln

(9:14 AM ET) NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Ameren Corp. /zigman2/quotes/200090237/composite AEE -0.86% Thursday reported fourth-quarter earnings of $61 million, or 30 cents a share, up from a year-ago profit of $20 million, or 10 cents a share. The latest results included storm-related costs of $28 million, or 13 cents a share. Revenue slid in the latest three months to $1.62 billion from $1.7 billion in the same period a year earlier. The average estimate of analysts polled by Thomson Financial was for a profit of 39 cents a share in the December period. Looking ahead, the St. Louis-based electricity and natural gas utility operator said it expects non-GAAP (generally accepted accounting principles) earnings of $3.15 to $3.60 a share for fiscal 2007. Wall Street's current consensus estimate is for a profit of $3.85 a share for 2007. The stock closed Wednesday at $54.89, up 34 cents.

Reliance Steel fourth-quarter net $74.6 mln vs $60.6 mln

(9:04 AM ET) NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Reliance Steel & Aluminum Co. /zigman2/quotes/203068587/composite RS +0.90% Thursday reported fourth-quarter earnings of $74.6 million, or 98 cents a share, up from a year-ago profit of $60.6 million, or 91 cent a share. Sales surged 81% in the latest three months to $1.57 billion from $868.7 million in the same period a year earlier. The Los Angeles-based metals company said the latest results include a pre-tax LIFO expense of $37.9 million, or 31 cents a share. The average estimate of analysts polled by Thomson Financial was for a profit of $1.22 a share in the December period on revenue of $1.56 billion. The company said its gross profit margins were slightly below its earlier expectations due to some inventory de-stocking that caused added competitive pressures. Reliance also said its LIFO expense in the latest quarter was "significantly higher" than anticipated. Looking ahead, Reliance forecast earnings of $1.25 to $1.35 a share for the first quarter. Wall Street's current consensus estimate is for a profit of $1.32 a share in the March period. Reliance said it expects "record sales and earnings again" in 2007 with acquisitions anticipated to increase revenue for the year by more than $1 billion from its 2006 total of $5.74 billion. The company also noted its board declared a 33% increase in its regular quarterly cash dividend on Wednesday, bringing the payout to 8 cents per share. The stock closed Wednesday at $43.10, up 31 cents.

Molson Coors profit up on volume gains, extra selling week

(8:59 AM ET) NEW YORK (MarketWatch) - Molson Coors Brewing Co. reported sharply higher fourth quarter profit Thursday, buoyed by volume increases and an extra selling week. The company said it earned $99.2 million, or $1.15 a share, up from $22.4 million, or 26 cents, in the year ago period. Excluding various items, the company would have earned $108.4 million, or $1.24 a share, up from $53.9 million, or 63 cents. Sales net of excise taxes were $1.5 billion, a gain of 10%, while volume rose to 10.9 million barrels form 10.3 million. The average estimate of analysts polled by Thomson Financial had been for Molson Coors /zigman2/quotes/205165133/composite TAP -1.53% to earn 94 cents a share on revenue of $1.42 billion.

Huntsman fourth-quarter earnings $80.2 mln vs loss $65 mln

(8:52 AM ET) NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Huntsman Corp. /zigman2/quotes/202684633/composite HUN +0.31% Thursday reported fourth-quarter earnings of $80.2 million, or 34 cents a share, up from a year-ago loss of $65 million, or 29 cents a share. Revenue slipped in the latest three months to $2.54 billion from $2.56 billion in the same period a year earlier. On an adjusted basis, The Woodlands, Texas-based Huntsman said it earned $117.3 million, or 50 cents a share, in the latest quarter. The average estimate of analysts polled by Thomson Financial was for a profit of 34 cents a share in the December period on revenue of $2.61 billion. In addition, the company, which earlier disclosed an agreement to sell its U.S. commodities business to Flint Hills Resources, said its board has initiated a quarterly dividend of 10 cents per share on its common stock, payable on March 30 to shareholders of record on March 15. The stock closed Wednesday at $21.06, up 2.3%.

Glatfelter fourth-quarter profit $15 mln vs $26.9 mln

(8:43 AM ET) NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- P.H. Glatfelter Co. /zigman2/quotes/201799418/composite GLT +1.32% Thursday reported fourth-quarter earnings of $15 million, or 33 cents a share, down from a year-ago profit of $26.9 million, or 61 cents a share. Excluding items, such as gains from the disposition of timberlands and shutdown and restructuring charges, the company posted a non-GAAP (generally accepted accounting principles) profit of $10 million, or 22 cents a share, in the latest quarter. Sales rose in the latest three months to $268.6 million from $143.2 million in the same period a year earlier. The York, Pa., specialty papers and engineered products maker noted that the latest results include the impact of its Lydney and Chillicothe acquisitions. The average estimate of analysts polled by Thomson Financial was for a profit of 15 cents a share in the December period. The stock closed Wednesday at $16.44, up 19 cents.
