Dow ends nearly 900 points lower in 2-day skid ahead of presidential election but tech stocks rallyU.S. stocks on Tuesday finished mostly lower, but technology-related stocks ended in the green, as investors appeared to try and position their portfolios with less than a week until the Nov. 3 election between President Donald Trump and Democratic challenger Joe Biden. The Dow Jones Industrial Average declined about 222 points, or 0.8% at 27,463, on a preliminary basis. The decline for the blue-chip benchmark follows a more than 650-point skid on Monday to start the last week in October. The S&P 500 index declined 0.3% at around 3,391, while the Nasdaq Composite Index , a benchmark teeming with technology-centered companies, gained 0.6% to close around 11,431. The moves in equities come amid an onslaught of corporate quarterly results, including those from Dow components 3M Co. , Merck & Co. and Caterpillar . Microsoft Corp. was slated to report after Tuesday's regular close of trading. Investors had appeared heartened by deal news, including a proposed $35 billion deal announcement between chip makers Advanced Micro Devices and Xilinx Inc. . Uncertainty about the election outcome and rising cases of COVID-19 also have been seen as contributing to the mostly downbeat sentiment on Wall Street, at least this week as investors await more clarity on the political landscape and the path of the virus. The global tally of confirmed cases of COVID-19 climbed above 43.5 million on Tuesday, according to data aggregated by Johns Hopkins University, while the death toll rose to 1.16 million. In economic reports, durable-goods orders rose a stronger-than-expected 1.9% in September. The Case-Shiller national home price index saw a 5.2% year-over-year gain for the 20 city index in August, up from revised 4.1% in July. The Conference Board's index of consumer confidence dipped to 100.3 this month from a pandemic high of 101.3 in September.
