Nasdaq Composite posts 46th record close of 2021 but broader stock market limps lower in week before ThanksgivingThe Nasdaq Composite index finished at a record high amid an otherwise lackluster end of the week for the broader market, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 ending the session in negative territory, amid growing concerns over rising cases of COVID-19 in the U.S. and Europe. However, the technology-laden Nasdaq Composite showed gains outperformed as a retreat in bond yields, which move opposite to prices, helped to support further gains for large-capitalization technology stocks, including chip makers like Micron Technology Inc. , which helped to lead gains in the Nasdaq. The tech-heavy index booked its 46th record closing high of 2021. Meanwhile, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed down nearly 270 points, or 0.8%, at 35,602, on a preliminary basis. The S&P 500 index ended the session down 0.1% at 4,698. For the week, the Dow closed down 1.4%, while the S&P 500 posted a weekly gain of 0.3% and the Nasdaq Composite's record run was aided by a 1.2% gain for the week. Nov. 26 marks Thanksiving in the U.S. and markets will be closed, while early closures will occur on the Friday after the holiday, known as Black Friday.

Micron to spend $150 billion in 10 years on building out memory manufacturing, stock fallsShares of Micron Technology Inc. fell 1.3% in premarket trading Wednesday, after the memory and semiconductor company said it will invest $150 billion over the next decade in memory manufacturing and research and development. The investment, which could include U.S. fab expansion, is aimed at addressing demand for memory, as memory and storage currently represent about 30% of the semiconductor market. "Memory is at the leading edge of semiconductor manufacturing and fuels everything from feature-rich 5G smartphones to the AI-enabled cloud," said Chief Executive Sanjay Mehrotra. "Micron's leadership in both DRAM and NAND technologies and the strength of our roadmap enable us to invest more than $150 billion with confidence to extend our industry-leading memory innovation into the next decade, and deliver differentiated products to our customers." Micron's stock has dropped 10.1% year to date while the PHLX Semiconductor Index has climbed 21.0% and the S&P 500 has advanced 20.3%.

David Tepper's Appaloosa trims equity holdings, sells off Disney, PayPal stakes while adding Uber, Pulte betsDavid Tepper's Appaloosa LP disclosed late Monday that it reduced its investment in nearly all of its holdings during the second quarter, as the value of equities held by the hedge fund declined by about 31%. The value of Appaloosa's equity holdings as of June 30 was $4.83 billion, down from $6.96 billion as of March 31, even as the S&P 500 rose 8.2% during that period. Among the fund's largest holdings, the Micron Technology Inc. stake was reduced to 5.65 million shares from 7.28 million shares, the Amazon.com Inc. stake was cut to 125,000 shares from 186,000 shares and the Facebook Inc. stake was lowered to 1.21 million shares from 1.82 million shares. Among some other moves during the quarter, the fund sold off its 145,000-share stake in Adobe Inc. , its 475,000-share stake in Discovery Inc. , the 345,000-share stake in Walt Disney Co. and it's 175,000-share stake in PayPal Holdings Inc. , while adding a new 2.04 million-share stake in Uber Technologies Inc. and a new 1.51 million-share stake in PulteGroup Inc. .

Bridgewater adds new stakes in chip makers and boosts GE bet, while selling off Boeing, Delta, UPS holdingsBridgewater Associates LP has disclosed that the value of its equity holdings as of the end of the second quarter increased by 37.5% from the end of the first quarter, while the S&P 500 increased just 8.2% over the same time. The hedge fund manager's largest company holding in terms of value as of June 30 was Walmart Inc. , with the fund increasing its ownership by 51% in three months to $736.5 million, while its holding of rival discount retailer Target Inc. grew 91% to $216.3 million. Among other changes the fund made to its holdings during the second quarter, it reduced its holding in Tesla Inc. by 31% to $17.15 million; it add new investments in chipmakers Nvidia Corp. worth $16.9 million, Advanced Micro Devices Inc. worth $10.4 million, Intel Corp. worth $2.0 million and Micron Technology Inc. worth $18.4 million; it sold off its stakes in Delta Air Lines Inc. and Southwest Airlines Co. , while adding a new $1.6 million stake in United Airlines Holdings Inc. ; it sold off its stakes in United Parcel Service Inc. and Boeing Co. , but added new stakes in Caterpillar Inc.
