Nucor weighing Midwest sites for new $2.7 billion steel plant Nucor Corp. said Monday it plans to spend about $2.7 billion to build a new steel mill that will produce 3 million tons of steel. Nucor said it'll choose between potential locations in Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia to build the plant, which will serve customers in the Midwest and Northeast markets and have a "significantly lower" carbon footprint than nearby competitors. Nucor president and CEO Leon Topalian said the mill will "allow us to competitively meet the growing need that many of our customers, particularly in the automotive market, have for high quality steel with a lower carbon footprint." The company did not say how it would staff the new plant or how many workers would be employed there. Shares of Nucor are up 97.2% so far this year, compared to a rise of about 18% for the S&P 500 .

US Steel says it has reduced debt by about $2.7 billion in the year so farUnited States Steel Corp. said late Thursday it has reduced its debt by abut $2.7 billion year to date, excluding debt taken on for its acquisition of Big River Steel which closed in January. The company paid about $774 million using cash on hand tp acquire the remaining equity in Big River Steel. U.S. Steel redeemed $718 million of its outstanding 6.875% notes due 2025 in August. In July, it announced a target of up to $1 billion of additional deleveraging by mid-2022, which it will achieve by redeeming $180 million of the 6.625% Big River Steel senior notes due 2029, and $370 million of the 6.25% U. S. Steel senior notes due 2026. The moves so far this year have reduced the company's annual run-rate interest costs by about $185 million and extended its maturity profile. The company also said it expects adjusted EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) of about $2.0 billion in the third quarter, up from second-quarter adjusted EBITDA of about $1.3 billion. It did not offer details in its release of which items are excluded in its adjusted EBITDA number, but said they are "certain charges that can obscure underlying trends." Shares fell 2.2% premarket Friday, but are up 51% in the year to date, while the S&P 500 has gained 19%.

Nucor to pay $1 billion in cash for Cornerstone Buildings Brands' insulated metal panels businessShares of Nucor Corp. slipped 0.1% in premarket trading Monday, after the steel and steel products maker announced an agreement to pay $1 billion in cash for the insulated metal panels (IMP) business of Cornerstone Building Brands. The deal is expected to close later this year. "We are excited about this opportunity to acquire a historical leader and innovator in the quickly growing IMP product category serving the non-residential market," said Nucor Chief Executive Leon Topalian. The IMP business being acquired has seven manufacturing facilities in North America. Nucor's stock has soared 104.5% year to date through Friday, while the SPDR Materials Select Sector ETF has advanced 21.4% and the S&P 500 has gained 12.6%.
